What Is a Translation Management System (TMS)?
A Translation Management System (TMS) is the platform that centralizes and coordinates the workflow of localization — managing translation memory, glossaries, file formats, team assignments, and quality checks in one place. It connects the organization’s content to the translators, tools, and automated processes that produce the localized output, and tracks status across all languages and projects.
What a TMS Does
Before centralized TMS platforms, enterprise localization ran on email and spreadsheets. Engineering would extract strings manually, send files to agencies, wait for return, reformat the output, and repeat. Version control was manual. Glossary consistency depended on individual translators checking a reference document. Status tracking was a series of email threads.
A TMS brings these workflows into a single system. Content enters the platform — extracted from a repository, uploaded as a file, or pushed via API — and moves through a defined pipeline: translation, review, quality check, and delivery back to the source. The platform stores the assets that make each subsequent project faster: Translation Memory, approved glossaries, style guides, and previous project history.
The Core Components
Translation Memory. Every segment approved through the TMS gets stored as a source-target pair. When new content arrives that matches or closely resembles something already translated, the system surfaces it — reducing the volume of new translation work and improving consistency across projects. Glossary and terminology management. The TMS enforces approved terminology across all translators working in the system. A term flagged as required or prohibited in the glossary appears as a visible reminder in the CAT editor. Workflow routing. When a developer commits new strings to a repository, an integrated TMS can detect the change, extract the new content, create a project, assign it to a translator or vendor, and track it through review and approval. The CAT editor. Translators work inside the TMS — not in Word or a separate application. The built-in CAT tool presents source and target side by side, surfaces TM matches, highlights glossary terms, and protects formatting tags from accidental modification.
Quality management. TMS platforms run automated quality checks — missing translations, untranslated placeholders, punctuation inconsistencies, glossary violations — before delivery. Manual review and LQA scoring can be built into the workflow as required approval steps.

In practice, most enterprise TMS platforms include a built-in CAT editor — so the two layers appear as one interface. But the CAT editor can also be used independently, connecting to an external TMS for assets.
How TMS Platforms Are Changing
Traditional TMS architecture was designed for human translation workflows: assign work, track progress, store output. Machine translation was added later as a plugin — an optional step before the human translator starts editing.
The direction of change is toward tighter MT integration at the workflow level. Rather than MT as a pre-processing step a translator might or might not use, platforms increasingly route content through configured MT first — with glossary constraints, TM context, and quality scoring applied before the human review queue. When the MT output already reflects the organization’s terminology, register, and TM context, the volume of corrections drops and the human review focuses on judgment calls rather than basic corrections.
